Phantasy Star Online 2 (PSO2) New Genesis – How to fix Lag, FPS Drops and Stuttering

PSO2 New Genesis Lag FPS Drops Stuttering Many PC players are experiencing performance issues such as lag, fps drop and stuttering in PSO2 New Genesis. These are the possible solutions to your problems.

How to fix FPS drops, lag and stuttering in PSO2 New Genesis

PSO2 New Genesis requirements are much higher than vanilla Phantasy Star Online 2.

PSO2 New Genesis system requirements are quite different to Phantasy Star Online 2. PSO2 used to require a GTX 750 ti and an Intel i5 processor to run the game at 1080p@60fps. The New Genesis update has changed things. Let’s look at the differences.

PROCESSOR Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 or higher i5 6500+ Intel (r) Core(tm i3-4150 Intel (r) Core(tm i9-10900
GRAPHICS NVIDIA GeForce7800GT AMD RADEONHD2900XT or a graphics card of the same caliber as above GeForce GTX 750T Ti or a Graphics card of the same caliber as above NVIDIA GeForce(r), GT430 NVIDIA(r), GeForce(r), RTX 2070 SUPER
STORAGE 80 GB 80 GB 103 GB available space 103 GB available space

The difference is dramatic, as you can see. It went from 750ti at 1080p@60fps, to RTX2070 Super. Some might believe it’s the same game. New Genesis is an expansion. The graphics have been updated and the game allows for up to 32 players to simultaneously play in the same place. You might see 32 people appear on your screen during boss fights. This is why these system requirements have been changed. PSO2 was once a good program on your computer, but that doesn’t necessarily mean PSO2 New Genesis will run well.

PSO2 New Genesis-Best Graphics Settings

To get more performance, you can tweak the graphics settings.

  • Effect Light Source Off
  • Terrain Lighting: Off
  • Camera Lighting Offered
  • Screen Edge Darkening: On
  • Global Illumination : On
  • Bloom Off
  • Light Rays Offered
  • Volumetric fog: Off
  • Effect Distortion Rendering: Off
  • Fur Rendering: Off
  • Blur Off
  • Color Tone Curve: Off
  • Depth of Field
  • Tesselation Off
  • Anti-Aliasing: FXAA
  • Specular Antialiasing: Off
  • Screen Space Reflection: Off
  • Ambient Occlusion: Off
  • Screen Space Shadow Off
  • Shadow Quality: 2

  • High Resolution (3D rendering resolution: Standard)
  • Automatic Resolution Adjustment
  • Maximum Frame Rate: Unrestricted
  • Texture Filtering: 2x
  • Texture Resolution: Low
  • Terrain Draw Distance: 3.

You would need to disable all settings except for a few. I will tell you why. FPS is a good indicator that you’re free to roam around the world. The frame rate drops dramatically when a large number of players join a fight. I was getting 80 FPS with my Ryzen 5 5600x+ RTX 3070 setup in a boss fight. There were 12 players performing different combos.

Services and applications that require heavy background

Many Windows services and applications can eat up large amounts of RAM without your knowledge. Windows 10 has many of these. People start experiencing stuttering and freezing in nearly every game.

You should check whether there are any unnecessary programs running in the background. You can choose which applications you want to start automatically when your system boots and stop them from starting.

  1. Open Task Manager
  2. Click on the Startup tab
  3. Make sure you keep the most important applications enabled
  4. The rest can be disabled

Nvidia Laptop users

You should ensure that you use a laptop with a dedicated Nvidia GPU.

Open Nvidia Control Panel and click on Manage 3D settings. You can then change ‘Preferred graphics processing’ to a ‘High-performance Nvidia process’. Restart the system.

Notifications and Overlays

If you’re playing the game via Steam, turn off the Steam overlay. Go to the Epic Games Launcher settings menu to play Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis. Scroll down to “Desktop Notifications”, and uncheck the boxes next to “Show Free Game Notifications”, and “Show News & Special Offer Notifications”.

You can also turn off overlays such as Nvidia GeForce experience or AMD Adrenaline.

I do not have any more methods at the moment. But I am constantly keeping an eye on the Forums, looking for new fixes.
